HIMALAYASX2011 / EXPEDITION OF WESTERN CHINA / Shin-do-Cheng to Jolong, Help from locals

Taken in. A Sino-Tibetan family I met while riding after dark invited me to stay in the heart of their home. We entered the building through the basement, with animals and farm equipment, through the center of the thick wooden beams (built of solid trees), we climbed a steep set of stairs into the center of their home. Welcomed, fed, and washed in a bowl, it was an amazing experience of warmth on a long, cold and sometimes desolate road.

What becomes clear in the mountains of central Sichuan Province, is the presence of Tibetan culture, people, food and return to original ways of life, including the yak herding to sustain their way of producing milk, yogurt and butter. It's delicious, thanks to these fine animals and the people who were open to sharing with me at no expense.  什么变得清晰在四川省中部山区，是藏族文化的人，食物和返回到原来的生活方式，包括牦牛放牧，以维持其生产的牛奶，酸奶和黄油的方式存在。它的美味，由于这些优良的动物和人民的开放与我共享，在不牺牲。

Local doctor and his friends advise me to go back, there is a landslide ahead on this route, 20 days later the road isn't clear. I tell them, it's impossible to go back (300-400km!) and I need to push ahead. I see locals walking from that direction, I knew they were getting through on foot. Wise decision, we made it!

Friends I met on the road, offered help when I needed it most, landslide ahead and no way around it. — in Sichuan, China.

The local doctor was convinced I would have to cycle back 400 km as a detour to the rock slide. But I assured him it was impossible on this expedition, I needed to continue. Together we teamed up with three of his friends recruited in town. 

They followed on motorcycles south to the kilometer of rock debris covered road, now turned into a narrow mountain trail by locals. The fact that I did see locals walking into the town from the mountains, and taxis driving to pick up and drop off, was enough evidence that I could make it through with their help. It was awesome and amazing kindness of everyone jumping up to help.

Landslide over 60 days old, the mountain collapsed over the road in an earthquake area.

Some rock slides along the route are not uncommon. Further north, I passed an entire section of roads covered my a mountain along a river in Jo-long. A doctor and three of his friends helped cross over the mountain slide, we almost lost my tent/sleeping bag to the white water below us...

This section of removed avalanche is already 60 days old. It takes months to clear some narrow passages in Sichuan, China. The government is now building tunnels through the mountains to avoid these situations. When you come to this on a fully-loaded bicycle (60kilograms) it becomes a very difficult mission alone, with friends you are okay, I met mine here in this town beforehand. Together, we made it through. Exciting making it, that's the constant suspense in a sub-60 day expedition because without logistic teams, backup sag wagons and support vehicles, or local contacts, you really take chances getting there, but in the end, that is the excitement that drives the desire to complete an expedition, the rougher the tougher is often the better for you too.

And the mission around the avalanche is underway, we start walking past the workers, who are using rock hammers above us, and other industrial tools to break more loose rocks away. Manual labor is a long process.

We almost lose a person, the cliff was steep and landed on a rock ledge next to the white water river, it was dangerous. The bag falling contains my sleeping bag and tent, it landed right on the ledge, oh, so lucky not to lose it in the river rapids. (:
